The Liver Gallbladder Flush

(Please read disclaimer at the bottom of the handout.)

The reasons for doing a liver or gall bladder flush vary.

Signs of stones in the gallbladder usually show up after eating a meal and can include:

  • An aversion to fatty foods (even nausea when eating them)

  • Wandering back pain—especially between the shoulder blades and under the right shoulder blade

  • Upper abdominal pain that gets bad really fast and lasts for about 30  minutes

  • Pain in the lower right rib cage area

  • Nightmares

  • Hiccoughs

  • Belching/burping excessively

  • Abdominal bloating

  • Indigestion

  • Colic

In veterinary school our instructors taught us that the gall bladder is known as "the great masquerader” because gall bladder symptoms are very similar to those of heart attack, appendicitis, ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, hiatal hernia, pancreatitis, and hepatitis.

The two types of gallstones are cholesterol stones and pigment stones. Cholesterol stones are usually yellow-green and are made primarily of hardened cholesterol. They account for about 80 percent of gallstones. This is what I believe the Liver—Gall bladder flush helps get rid of. Pigment stones are small, dark stones made of bilirubin. Gallstones can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a golf ball. The gallbladder can develop just one large stone, hundreds of tiny stones, or almost any combination. I have also seen the inside of the gall bladder have all kinds of finger-like projections within it filling up the gallbladder’s insides so much that it would seem to be an impossibility for the bile to be stored and released. I’ve wondered over the years if this is not a cause of some gall bladder symptoms.

Factors affecting gall stone production include:

Obesity—the more weight you have the more likely you are to form stones.

Excess Estrogen—increases cholesterol (a major component of gall stones) and decreases the contractions of the gall bladder.

Ethnicity—Native Americans and Mexicans seem to be predisposed to make stones for some reason.

Gender and Age—Women are twice as likely to get gall stones than men, and women over the age of 60 have a higher frequency as well. I’ve heard doctor’s say that anyone over the age of 40 usually has gall stones.

Taking Cholesterol Lowering Drugs—More cholesterol is secreted in through the bile when on these types of drugs. It seems to make sense that taking natural substances to decrease cholesterol would also influence this, but I know of no scientific studies yet to show that.

Fasting and Dieting—As the fat is mobilized, it passes through the digestive tract and therefore the gall bladder.

Diabetics—Have higher levels of triglycerides which are passed into the gall bladder and make up bile.

You will need:

3 quarts apple juice, natural  (not cider)

1 cup Italian virgin olive oil (not light)

1 cup (not can) Classic Coke (room temperature)

1 lemon, to be juiced at mixing time

Phosfood Liquid from Standard Process Labs

An effective herbal laxative for your body (My favorite is Nature’s Sunshine LBS II. It’s non-addictive and most health food stores carry it.)

Additional items needed if you want to examine the stones from the flush:

  • Colander to catch the stones

  • Pair of tweezers

  • Small sieve-strainer so that stones can be washed under the faucet

  • Small jar to put stones into after washing in cold water

  • Mason jar to fill with cold water to wash the stool through the colander.

Procedure for the Liver-Gallbladder Cleanse:

1.  Take the Herbal Laxative formula for 1-2wks. before the flush beginning this procedure.

2.  Drink one quart of apple juice per day with 90 drops Phosfood added to each quart. This may be drunk at intervals throughout the day, one quart each day for 3 days.  (Note: If you are a diabetic don't use apple juice- substitute distilled water. This is the only substitution that should ever be made.)

3.  Wait three hours after eating dinner on the third night then thoroughly mix the following:

1 fresh lemon, juiced

1 cup Italian virgin olive oil, and

1 cup of room temperature Classic Coke

Drink this mixture quickly before it settles.  You will feel very full.  Personally, it makes me want to puke. If you have an oily film on your teeth you can take the lemon rind and wipe them and the oily feeling will disappear.

4. Immediately after drinking the above mixture, lie down on your right side for 30 minutes. . . no cheating on time.  You may draw your knees up to your chest during this time, or stretch out full length.  After this time, move around a bit and then you may resume normal activity.  It will take approximately 8 hours for the flush to work.

5.  If you are going to save or examine any of the “stones”, be sure to have a colander, tweezers, a small sieve-strainer and a container in the bathroom.  Place the colander on the rim of the toilet and put the seat down. . .before you go to bed and before you need it.  You should not feel any panic or extreme urgency when the flush begins.  There will be no diarrhea.  There will be considerable soft stool the first time and less with each successive bowel movement.  Most of the stones will come out with the second movement.  Your stool will firm up approximately after the fifth movement.

6. Rinse the stool with cold water while in the sieve, then put them into a Mason jar.  The stones will be somewhat soft and waxy green in color, like cooked peas.  Pick the stones out with the tweezers and re-rinse them in the small sieve.  Store the stones if you must in container with a little water.  Note they will dissolve in about one week if not frozen.

Personally, I think the stones are comprised of some of the oil ingested for the flush. They are green because they have absorbed the bile. I have gotten some great results with this technique even though I personally don’t believe there were truly stones that passed, but maybe they really did dissolve. I cut into a couple of mine and they were not hard at all.

7. IMPORTANT.  That evening, take a natural herbal laxative to clean out any remaining stones.

Other treatments and diets to use:

I have successfully used Hydrangea Root capsules or tea to help all kinds of stones including liver, gall bladder, kidney and some bladder stones.

Real drugs used in dissolving gall stones include:

  • Ursodeoxycholic acid (Urdox tablets)

Gall Stone Diet: For prevention of stones you will want to stay on a low-fat diet and minimize chocolate, cheese foods high in refined sugar, soda pop (the phosphoric acid sucks out the calcium from the body helping stones to form) and pastries. Eat more fiber, more raw fruits and vegetables, more cooked vegetables and drink more purified water.

DISCLAIMER:

As with all natural techniques, you are reading this handout for educational purposes only. If you decide to do something on your own with the information, that is your constitutional right, BUT I would advise that you have a back-up plan if you decide to do this technique (for example, a naturopath available to assist you and a doctor just in case.) Extreme pain should ALWAYS be followed with a visit to your doctor.

This technique is really fairly safe, it’s just that if a stone is too large to pass and it gets trapped in the common bile duct so that bile cannot get out of the gall bladder, you can be in serious trouble and need some medical care in the form of pain killers and possibly ultrasonic equipment to break the stone up (called lithotripsy.)  If the bile ducts remain blocked for a significant period of time, severe—possibly fatal—damage or infections affecting the gallbladder, liver, or pancreas can occur. Warning signs of a serious problem are chills, fever, clay-colored stools, jaundice (this is when you turn yellow—it will show up in the white’s of your eyes,) and persistent pain.
